Dr Tom Greeves

Dr Tom Greeves is a cultural environmentalist. He explores the landscape through highly trained eyes, teasing out messages about people who have lived and worked over the last 8,000 years or so. He helps others to acquire or hone these skills, whether individuals or communities. Reading the landscape like a book, he equally enjoys researching ancient manuscripts, or talking to the people of a place about their memories.

He frequently makes new and important discoveries. Studying as a prehistorian at Edinburgh University, he acquired a doctorate in history and archaeology at Exeter University, studying the Devon tin industry. He was the first Sites & Monuments Officer for the county of Devon, establishing the county archive of archaeology 1976-9. From 1979-1985 he was the first Archaeologist to Dartmoor National Park Authority, and from 1985-1990 he worked in London with the environmental arts group Common Ground, having responsibility for the national Parish Maps project. Since 1990 he has worked freelance.

As a consultant his clients have included the Royal Parks (archaeological surveys of Richmond and Bushy Parks), English Heritage (Monuments Protection Programme), Ministry of Defence (historical and archaeological surveys), West Midlands Arts, MED Theatre, Dartmoor National Park Authority, English Nature, and many others. A bibliography of his work is available (by email) on request.
